Stuff the Duffel – How much kit can a Base Camp duffel take? Part 1 (series of 5)

Duffel Love One of our all time favourite products here at LD is the Base Camp Duffel from North Face. We find ourselves recommending them a lot. Everyone who has ever worked here has got one. We’re pretty sure that extended family and friends of everyone who has ever worked here have all got one. The delivery guy who picks up our parcels every day has got one. You get the picture. Base Camp Benefits For outdoor folk like us (and our family and friends and the parcel delivery guy)... Read More

Skiing on the Fells, Moors and Dales

Whenever the conversation gets round to skiing most people immediately conjure up images of the Alps or North America, with resorts such as Val d’Isère , Kitzbuhel , Aspen and Whistler perhaps springing to mind.  But let’s face it, most of us don’t live near these places and most of us have to work for a living so if you want regular skiing or boarding then you often have to look a little closer to home. In the north of England we have a few secret spots that are considerably... Read More

Stay Safe in the Deeps and Steeps

With increased numbers of skiers and snowboarders heading to the slopes each year, more and more of us are heading off the beaten track and venturing in to the sidecountry, slackcountry or backcountry. As we search for fresh snow, solitude and testing lines the risk of course increases. Without wanting to cause undue panic, the fact remains that 150 plus people are killed in avalanches each year so we really need to think about limiting the risks for ourselves, our group and to others. Like most... Read More

Carry On Walking Through The Winter

A good friend of Ld Mountain Centre Mark Dunn has kindly wrote us a blog on his mountaineering adventures. Mark is a passionate walker/mountaineer and has illustrated just how spectacular the British outdoors can be. Hope you enjoy… What a fabulous summer it has been, the best in ages. We’ve all enjoyed endless, sunny, warm days ideal for long, memorable walking and hiking expeditions in the hills. Sadly, despite some beautiful autumn weather, it seems that the spells of sunshine and cloud free days are coming to an end. Certainly... Read More

Carry on Camping

Hopefully, I’ll be getting out camping for the August Bank holiday this year… a friend of mine has never been camping so a few of us thought we’d spend the weekend breaking her in to, cooking on a small stove, sleeping in a tent, playing frisbee until it’s too dark to see, card games, midnight walks and sneaky toilet trips in the middle of the night. I’ll most likely be going to Hadrian’s wall as it’s local to where I live and is perfect for a couple of nights easy... Read More

New brands for the winter!

So it’s getting to that time of year again for us at the LD Mountain Centre. The (even) colder months are coming round all too quickly again as we will begin to get winter stock at the end of this month. Although we haven’t had much of a summer, we do have exciting new brands to look forward to for the winter. 686 On November 13, 1992, the 686 technical apparel company was formed. The 686 name comes from a crucial date in the life of Mike’s grandmother (June 6th,... Read More

Midge bites suck.

In Scotland, 37 different species of midges have been recorded. Now that’s a horrible thought. “Culicoides impunctatus, which is responsible for up to 90% of the bites on humans, occurs throughout the country, although it is most abundant in the west and the north, where the boggy and acidic ground provides an optimal environment for breeding. Midges are at their most numerous at lower elevations, and are seldom encountered above about 500 metres, where the wind reduces their ability to fly.” Most people I know have experienced a bite from a midge –... Today the Norrona range covers snow sports, outdoor, biking, running and hunting using fabrics of their own and from renowned manufacturers such as Gore-Tex. The Bitihorn dri1 jacket is Norrona’s lightest waterproof jacket. It is ideal for hiking, biking and trail... Read More
