Where to hike?
If you’re heading to Tenerife, then a trek up Mount Teide is not to be missed. The steep ascent promises awe-inspiring views from the top, making the hike up well worth it. Although, there’s also a cable car to take you to the top in minutes, if you’re not up for the challenge.
Translating to the Green Caves, Cueva de los Verdes are home to some of the longest and most impressive volcanic tunnels in the world. Once used by pirates, these caves are accessible to children and adults, so exploring in and around the caves will make a fantastic walking trip for the whole family.
A short ferry ride north west of Lanzarote is La Graciosa – a sparsely populated island with white sandy beaches and volcanic peaks which are ripe for the exploring. Perfect for a day trip, hikers can get away from the crowded resorts to enjoy peace and tranquility – just make sure you don’t miss the boat home!
La Palma also promises some truly brilliant hikes, and Punta Gorda is a great place to begin, whether you’re a hiking veteran or just starting out. With a good choice of flat trails, there are walks for all abilities here, but make sure you’re wearing the right walking boots to tackle the terrain.
What to pack?
Although the overall weather on the Canary Islands is mild and sunny, it can quickly change as clouds and winds blow in off the Atlantic Ocean – so being prepared for these changes is going to be vital for comfortable hiking.
Beyond your day-to-day wear and swimming clothes, don’t forget to think about what to pack for your hikes. The last thing you want when you’re out hiking is to be caught out by a dramatic change in weather. Be sure to pack a few items to cope with sudden changes, like a waterproof jacket and a high-quality, lightweight hiking rucksack that has plenty of compartments for carrying your walking essentials. Water, a change of socks, first aid kit and sunscreen will all be vital for your hiking trip, and for safety purposes, it’s a good idea to keep your valuables with you at all times – as well as a torch and map of the area.

While wild camping may be a tempting choice, it’s prohibited on some of the islands, so do your research before you go.
If camping isn’t for you, why not hire a Lanzarote villa instead? With all the home comforts you need after a long day out hiking – including private pools, fully-equipped kitchens and comfy beds – you can make sure you’re well-rested for another day of adventure.
