A Scandinavian Saga (Part 1 of the Trilogy)

We’ve all gone a bit Scandi mad at LD Mountain Centre this winter with three of our staff heading off to different parts of Scandinavia for their winter adventures. In part one of this trilogy we hear from Sophie who with her fella set off in mid January set off on  a 6000 mile road trip visiting six countries over three weeks.

Sophie in Lofoten

Our mammoth road trip started with an overnight DFDS ferry ride to Ijmuiden from North Sheilds harbour. The first day was a grueling 600 mile journey passing through Holland and Germany to the Northern tip of Denmark. From here we caught the early morning ferry to Kristiansand, Norway.

Mapping our trip 10 days before departure, our aim was to skirt around the Western coast of Norway before crossing into the Arctic Circle; making it over the ice road trucker routes to Nordkapp without incident.

Our journey home to the UK would take us through Finland and down the length of Sweden, stopping at only the most impressive locations these countries have to offer.

The Beautiful Lofoten Islands

The Waterfalls at Njupeskar

Scandinavia is a must visit for those of you who love to get stuck into the thrill of a winter season. It’s endless provision of snow guarantees an adventurous getaway.

We spent the best part of our time fjord hopping, driving through hidden valleys, spotting roadside reindeer, sleeping out under the Northern Lights and hiking into the tundra to find enormous frozen waterfalls, which were ideal for ice-climbing. Facing temperatures of -20°C most nights in our Sprinter van, it’s certainly a road trip to remember.
