The midsole is reinforced with an additional moulded thermo plastic shank (TPU) and finished with the Vibram outsole. The updated Scarpa SL is the definitive hill walking boot which will perform well on any rugged terrain throughout the year. Crampon compatible for short summit trips or easy glacier walking.
These are the best all round boots I have had in the last 40 years. The best fit, the best support, the best quality. Rubber rand all round and thick leather means they are fully waterproof without the need for Goretex liner which in my experience always seems to fail after a year or two. Superb lacing system with short toe box ensures a really good fit. Ideal for most of Scotland in most conditions, taking a walking crampon well, but so comfortable I will also wear on a country lane. The sole has more cushioning in than I would expect for a "B1" boot, so they are fine on hard compacted ground or tracks. I have just bought a second pair for my son.
Before purchasing these boots, I owned a pair of Scarpas for c. 20 years. After a great deal of use year in year out, my original boots have stood the test of time in all respects and I didn't really need to replace them. Nevertheless, I wanted to treat myself and, looking at other brands/boots, none seemed to compare to these SL Actives. LDMC offered them at the lowest price I could find. I've only used the boots once on a reasonably long winter hike in the Dales, but they were fab - comfortable, stiff, completely waterproof and I think they look brill. I look forward to 20+ years of adventure in them.
